Chris “Raven” Sheasby, Managing Director (He/him)

Chris, known as “Raven” in these parts, began his journey at Kamp Kiwanis in 2000 as an Outdoor Program Leader and immediately fell in love with the place. During the past 23 years, he has worked every job at Kamp, except for Lifeguard - apparently doggie paddle is not recognized as an acceptable stroke! Raven holds degrees in History and Education and has over 25 years experience working in camp settings.

Raven grew up in Calgary where his love for the outdoors was fostered. Many weekends were spent cross country skiing, mountain biking, or climbing. During high school, Raven volunteered for a week as a Counsellor for an Outdoor School Program. It was during this experience that the first sparks of his career were lit. Raven volunteered for another two years and then began working seasonally at Kamp Kiwanis. After a brief stint learning to build guitars in Vancouver and a few months teaching in Calgary, Raven found that helping kids enjoy the outdoors was what he wanted to do full time. In 2009, Raven became the Camp Director at Kamp Kiwanis and now has been the Managing Director at Kamp Kiwanis for over a decade.

Raven’s favourite thing about Kamp is how it empowers people to be the best version of themselves while helping others grow in their own version of their best self. Kamp really is the ultimate expression of community!

When Raven is not at Kamp, you can likely find him either playing outside (climbing, hiking, kayaking, biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing - pretty much anything outside), roasting coffee, or cooking pizza (the pandemic upped his pizza game considerably!)

BECCA “HOOT” SHAPIRO, camp directoR (SHE/HER)

Becca, a.k.a “Hoot” has spent most of her life in Calgary after moving from Winnipeg as a child. She is bilingual and attended French immersion schooling from kindergarten until graduating high school. Hoot first started camping and enjoying the outdoors with her family and then as a Girl Guide, starting in Brownies (now Embers) and continued until Rangers.

She first came to Kamp Kiwanis as a high school volunteer Counsellor for a week of Outdoor School in 2014. She then attended the K.I.T.E.s Program that summer and started working at Kamp, first as a counsellor and then as First Aid Coordinator. In her break from working at Kamp, Hoot worked at the Calgary Humane Society facilitating summer day camps and outreach events. During her time away from Kamp, Hoot became a Primary Care Paramedic (EMT) at SAIT, as well as, a First Aid and Professional Responder Instructor with the Red Cross. Hoot has played ringette for over 15 years and is a referee for ages U8 and up..

In February 2023 Hoot returned to Kamp Kiwanis to take on the role of Program Coordinator and support the administration and development of Outdoor School and Summer Camp Programs. In Fall 2023 Hoot became Camp Director.

Two of Hoot’s favourite Summer Camp activities are:

  1. PBK!!!! - because it’s such a fun and refreshing way to wake up

  2. Day hikes - because of the beautiful views and the feeling of accomplishment once you all get to the summit together!

She’s always excited to learn more about our local wildlife during Outdoor School – especially birds (like owls!)

Coire “Fox” Sneddon, assistant director (He/Him)

Coire or “Fox” is from a regional Australian town called Ballarat where he famously worked as a Wizard for three years at Kryal Castle. This was where his passion of working with kids began. The joy and fulfillment he experienced from brightening kids’ days was unmatched. He first came to Kamp Kiwanis in the beginning of 2017 as a “gapper” where he worked as a Counsellor for both Outdoor School and Summer Camp. Fox immediately fell in love with both Canada and Kamp. He returned the following year to once again work as an Outdoor School Program Leader and took on a new position as one of the Leadership Coordinators for the summer.

Fox then returned to Australia where he completed his degree in Animation and Game Design at RMIT in addition to studying Conservation and Land Management at Federation University. His time studying conservation further fuelled his passion for the outdoors and the desire to do what he could to educate and inform. In between studying Fox worked as a cabinet maker, creating freestanding furniture and as a mental health support worker providing emotional and physical support to a range of clientele.

Fox loves to travel! He has visited most of Australia either by car or plane, and has visited Australia’s cousin New Zealand. He has done many road trips during his time in North America including trips to Montana, Toronto and even Alaska. He hopes to see more of North America and beyond in the following years.

In 2023 he returned to Kamp to once again work as a Counsellor for both the Summer and Fall seasons. At the end of 2023 he accepted the position of Assistant Director. Fox loves Kamp for its ability to bring people together and to foster a sense of community. To him it has always felt like a welcoming space and he hopes to continue nurturing this feeling.

Jenn “Splash” Radder, Community Development director (SHE/HER)

Jenn, known as “Splash,” began her adventures at Kamp Kiwanis in 2000 in the role of Summer Arts & Crafts/First Aid Coordinator when her Kamp name was “Echinacea” or “Ecky.”  Throughout the past 2 decades, Splash has held various positions at Kamp including Outdoor School Program Leader, Cross-Country Skiing Instructor, Special Events Coordinator, Rentals Coordinator, Day Trip Coordinator, Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director. Splash also served on the Board of Directors when she was not employed by Kamp. In 2016 Splash re-joined the team as Development Coordinator supporting Kamp Kiwanis in fund development, marketing & social media and community engagement, including coordinating the annual Kiwanis Apple Festival. As of April 2022, Splash has taken on the role of Community Development Director, adding overseeing rental bookings to her portfolio. Splash holds degrees in Zoology and Education from the University of Calgary and has over 30 years of experience working in sports, recreation and camp-related settings with a focus in not-for-profit organizations.

Splash grew up in Ontario where her love for the outdoors began at a young age going to her grandparents’ cottages every summer and attending her first camp with Girl Guides at the age of 6. Girl Guides and school experiences connected her to more camps, outdoor school programs, canoe trips and summer jobs working as waterfront staff. Kamp holds a special place in Splash’s heart, as she has seen the positive impact the experiences have made in the lives of many children and staff. Splash met her husband at Kamp Kiwanis and together they have 2 daughters and a dog.  When Splash is not at Kamp, she loves getting out to the mountains with her family and volunteers as a Girl Guide Leader.

Douglas “Talon” McGregor, Food Services Manager (He/Him)

Born in Calgary and spending most of his life here, Doug's family introduced him to the outdoors at an early age through family camping trips, hiking and summer camp experiences. These trips ignited a passion for the outdoors that he still fosters today. It wasn’t until his first experience as a volunteer high school Counsellor at Silver Creek Outdoor School that he experienced working with youth and gained the name “Talon”. Volunteering three more times throughout his High School years, Talon went on to work at Kamp Kiwanis, Silver Creek Outdoor School and Camp Chief Hector where he focused on improving both his leadership and backcountry skills.

It was in 2003 that Talon took his first kitchen job while working towards an education degree at the University of Calgary. The fast paced environment and team mentality appealed to him and his culinary career began. Throughout his career he has done fine dining, catering, and has over a decade of experience as a Head Chef in restaurants.

Talon is excited to be back at Kamp Kiwanis in the role of Food Services Manager where he can combine his love of the outdoors, culinary experience, and leadership skills. He is looking forward to all that this opportunity has to offer.
