Summer Camp Leadership Programs
Kamp Kiwanis Camp Leadership programs are structured to be a 4-step process leading to employment possibilities at Kamp Kiwanis Calgary. Participation in all four stages of the leadership development process is not essential to gain employment at Kamp Kiwanis, however it is highly recommended. Outdoor Skills I (OSI)A 7 day program - August 1 - 7, 2012 The goal of OSI is to provide a transition experience for our summer campers that bridges their 'camper' experience as senior, junior, or intermediate campers, with leadership training and service. We want participants to develop a sense of service to the camp community while participating in adventurous, fun camp activities. OSI includes an 2 day hike up the Elbow River valley walking from the Kamp Kiwanis site; camp service work; mountain biking, plus an assortment of fun in-camp activities. Selection to the OSI program is based on 'leadership potential' as articulated by applicants in the nomination form. This experience (new as of 2007) is part of the core Kamp Kiwanis summer camp programs. There is a fee for service and open registration for this program, but scholarships of up to 100% are awarded to every camper where ability to pay is a barrier to participation. All senior campers from the previous summer program will be invited to apply for the OSI program. As an open registration program, applicants who have not attended Kamp Kiwanis in the past can also apply to attend. Outdoor Skills IIA 7 day program - August 9 - 15, 2012 The goal of Outdoor Skills is to provide a facilitated group wilderness travel experience. We want Outdoor Skills II Participants (OSPs) to develop competencies in traveling in Kamp Kiwanis' wilderness travel areas, including adjacent wild areas at Kamp Kiwanis. Participants are involved with a 2 day Elbow River Valley wilderness hike; mountain biking and camp service projects. OSPs also spend time participating in some 'in-camp' experiences such as arts and crafts, swimming and canoeing. OSII participants can expect to further the skills they learned in Outdoor Skills I. Kounsellor in Training (KIT)An 8 day program - July 22 - July 29, 2012 Participants in the Kounsellor in Training (KIT) Program will experience a variety of skill sessions in working with children and learn about activity leadership skills. They will experience placements with cabin groups and contribute to community service initiatives. They will learn about campfire program skills and be involved in a variety of personal and group development sessions. Participants successfully completing this program are top candidates for future employment at Kamp Kiwanis. Leaders in Training for Excellence (LITE) ProgramThe Kamp Kiwanis LITE Program is a 20 day program - July 1 - 19, 2012. The aim of the Kamp Kiwanis Leadership Program is to further develop expertise in a variety of wilderness travel and camp adventure skill experiences. The goal is for participants to develop both hard and soft skills that will help them to acquire job positions at Kamp Kiwanis or at any other camp. We are aiming to be a leader in the camping industry within Alberta in the training of camp leaders. As such, our program offers the greatest number of opportunities for adventure related and safety certification of any camp in Alberta. Participants acquire several nationally recognized certifications in outdoor leadership and safety including Standard 1st Aid, CPR from Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine, Bronze Medallion and Senior Resuscitation through the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada. Leadership participants participate in an 5 day backpacking trip in the Elbow - Sheep River valley region of Kananaskis Country as well as a 3 day lake water canoe trip on the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes. These back country trips will develop the wilderness knowledge and skills of participants. Leadership participants also have opportunities to organize and lead program activities for campers aged 10-12 years old. This experience provides a well rounded foundation for working with children in the outdoors. Participants successfully completing this program are top candidates for future employment at Kamp Kiwanis. Registration InformationRegistration is limited to 8-10 participants in each session.
